He earned a master's degree in history and was on his way to getting a doctorate when the library offered him a full-time position. Later, he helped work his way through UCLA as a shelver in the university library. He was 16 when a friend told him about a part-time job at the Beverly Hills Public Library, retrieving books for patrons from the closed shelves. "It was a lovely library, and people loved it," Tuchmayer said, "but there was nothing we could do about the parking." The Myrtle Grove branch was replaced by the larger Pine Valley Library earlier this year.Ī native of Los Angeles, Tuchmayer said, "I kind of fell into libraries by accident." Rapid development quickly hemmed the little branch in. When the Myrtle Grove Library opened in 1993, its nearest neighbor was a ballpark. "The biggest mistake we ever made was not buying more land at Monkey Junction," he said. "He's always cheerful and full of ideas," said Rebecca Taylor, a retired librarian who used to head the old Myrtle Grove branch. "He gets a light in his eyes when he gets an idea - and he gets a lot of ideas. "He always welcomes," said Hathia Hayes, a longtime officer with the New Hanover County Friends of the Library. “Harry has served in almost every role at our public library and has brought incredible advances in our library system," Coudriet said. Roy Cooper, County Manager Chris Coudriet formally presented Tuchmayer with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina's highest honor for civilian public service. So, library staff and county officials gathered to celebrate last week. Assistant Library Director Paige Owens will move into the top spot on July 1. That era is about to end, though, when Tuchmayer retires. Harry Tuchmayer, however, has been with the New Hanover County Public Library for 38 years - 11 of them as director. ![]() WILMINGTON - "Harry's been with the county so long," joked County Commissioner Chairman Jonathan Barfield, "when Moses came down from the mountain with the Ten Commandments, Harry was there to ask for a copy for the library."
